After Brazil India is the largest sugarcane producer in the world. Presently, about 4 million hectares of land is under sugarcane with an average yield of 70 tonnes per hectare.
While India scores second in sugarcane production, it is the largest producer of sugar including traditional cane sugar sweeteners, khandsari and Gur equivalent to 26 million tonnes raw value. Even in respect of white crystal sugar, India has ranked No.1 position in 7 out of last 10 years.
Sugar production in India is highly concentrated in the Uttar Pradesh due to abundant supply of raw material in the state. Bajaj Hindustan, India's largest sugar producer is also based out of U.P.
